Garden Haiku in Second Grade
Second Grade, Cindy Jenson-Elliott, Aly McCall, Carlisa Endoso

We taught a lesson about 16th century Japanese poet Basho, and how he wrote haiku about nature using his senses. The second grade teachers then took the students out into the garden and they wrote haiku about their sensory experiences of the garden.

Plants and flowers bloom
The wind blows all around me.
Bugs and plants are near.
-- Sophie

Flowers grow in peace.
Flowers need sunlight and dirt.
Flowers smell lovely.
-- Matthew

Many different dirts.
Sound of loud cars on Rosecrans.
Gives me lots of peace.
-- Garrett

The sun shines brightly.
I feel the breeze in my hair.
I like the nice smell.
--Ryan

Moisture settling
Frigid wind blowing on us.
Cold weather is here.
-- Colin

We hear the grass grow
On our way to the garden
We will see more plants.
--Kazuha

I hear the cars go.
Wiggly earthworms go, too.
The crumbling dirt.
--Jack

Feel your heart in you.
See the cars on the roadside.
Beautiful flowers.
--Benny

Wiggly earthworms
The sun is bring and sunny.
The flowers smell good.
by Lucie

The whispering wind
Tickling centipedes, too.
Calms me down a lot.
--Luke

Kids stomping, stomp, stomp, stomp
Butterflies flying up high
Birds chirping a song.
--Amanda

The whispering wind.
A small centipede crawling.
A radish blowing.
--Audrey

The bird sings a song.
Slugs hum a tune to a bird.
The flowers bloom, too.
--Hannah

Kids stomping their feet
The crusty dirt in my hands
Flowers with pink tips.
--Anna

The scent of flowers.
The wind churning peacefully.
Flowers growing tall.
--Noah
