Explorer Elementary was the only elementary school in the San Diego Unified School District to receive the Distinguished School Award of California from the Department of Education in 2004.

• California Students Donate Handmade Quilt to Queens School in Memory of Sept. 11

Working with state senator Dede Alpert, Explorer students sent a patchwork quilt made of original student artwork, to the students of P.S. 206 in Rego Park, Queens. The quilt was an extension of love and helped the students reach out to other children affected by the September 11 tragedy.
