In second grade, more confident readers and writers are able to probe more deeply and widely into the rich literature available. Again, learning begins close to home with studies of families and the diversity of geography, customs and traditions from which we all come. Students in second grade focus on autobiographies, and biographies to complete a three-generation family project, read and write about personal heroes and the lives of famous Americans. Writing workshop and publishing encourage writing for a purpose and provide a context for developing writing skills. Math skills continue to develop with more focus this year on using math to solve real world problems. The school-wide interdisciplinary theme provides a broad context for engaging high level thinking about all learning.
