In third grade, students continue to develop more sophisticated reading and writing skills. They focus on author studies in which they read books, and analyze the writing techniques and artistic style of specific authors. They also learn to use other resources such as the Internet and filmed interviews to familiarize themselves with favorite authors. These in-depth author studies motivate students to add depth, description and creativity to their own writing as they begin to apply what they have learned from such detailed studies of writing technique. In a similar way, students are led to study the art and technique of favorite illustrators and apply this learning to their own illustrations. In this way, students develop their own voices by analyzing the voices of published writers and illustrators. Math learning also continues with the addition of more complex problem-solving, multiplication, fractions and decimals. At all grade levels, teachers apply elements of depth and complexity to differentiate learning for students in their classrooms.
