Fundraising Activities

Explorer receives an average of $6700 per student per year from the state of California. The cost, however, of educating children at Explorer Elementary Charter School, with small class sizes and enrichment activities, is actually $7600 per student per year. That means that Explorer must raise about $200,000 each year to cover operating costs and make up the difference. A number of fund raising activities, coordinated by the Parent Council and run by parent volunteers, make it possible for Explorer to cover the shortfall.

Ralph's Grocery Stores
If you shop at RALPH's, get your RALPH's card registered with Chris Anderson (619) 223-1510. Ralph's has a less sophisticated program than eSCRIP, but generously donates four to five percent of monthly purchases back to the school each month.

Pizza Lunches
Tuesdays are Pizza Days at Explorer. Twice yearly, parents have a chance to order and pay for a weekly Papa's Pizza and carrot lunch for their children. Pizza lunch is every child's dream meal, and more importantly, proceeds go toward supporting important Explorer programs.

Art from the Heart
Art from the Heart (AFTH) is Explorer's most important, exciting and inspiring fundraising event of the year. AFTH is a magical, elegant evening of food, wine and an auction for adults attended by Explorer parents, staff and supporters. The evening includes a silent auction and elegant hors d'oeuvres. But the real action is in the live auction, in which parents bid on one-of-a-kind artwork by the children, exotic trips and special events. Each year, the Parent Council raises money through AFTH to support Explorer's small class sizes and special programs. Volunteers are needed in this fundraiser to collect donations from businesses, prepare food and decorations and staff the event itself.

Scholastic Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair is a chance to shop for your children's favorite books at a weeklong in-school bookstore, while at the same time raising money and building classroom libraries for Explorer. Held just in time for the winter holidays, the Scholastic Book Fair is a great way to fulfill the holiday wishes of boys, girls, families and teachers.

Gift Wrap Sale
Traditionally the first fundraiser of the year, the Gift Wrap sale gives families the opportunity to complete early holiday shopping for small gifts as well as wrapping paper and fancy boxes and bags, while raising money for Explorer.

Art Cards
Children have a chance to create one-of-a-kind note and holiday cards which will be professional printed and sold in packets of twenty by Art Cards as a fundraiser for Explorer.

Skate Nights
Explorer's four yearly Skate Nights are Fundraisers and Fun-raisers combined. Families converge at Skate World in Linda Vista, lace up their skates or roller blades, and rock and roll to old- and new-school tunes. The limbo and hokey-pokey are great crowd pleasers and even teachers skate with children in tow. It's two hours of great friends, great fun, and raising funds.

Explorer Wear
Everyone is proud to wear Explorer Wear, shirts, jackets and hats with the Explorer logo. Held early in the year so children can get new shirts to fit their new sizes, Explorer wear is a way for Explorer families to wear their love of Explorer on their sleeves, and a great way to fulfill holiday shopping needs while raising money for the school.
